Health Insurance

Mandatory Health Insurance Coverage

The Swiss law on health insurance (KVG) requires that every person living in Switzerland has to take out Swiss health insurance covering medical treatment and hospital costs in case of illness.

The Cantonal authorities check the insurance coverage of each person.

This has to be done within the first 3 months of your arrival (before leaving Switzerland you should cancel your insurance with at least one month's notice).

EU citizens holding a European Health Insurance Card are sufficiently insured. However, we recommend to check if their insurance coverage is according to Swiss standards. For students from the EU-8 states, Bulgaria, Romania or from Non-EU countries we recommend that you take out health insurance with SWISSCARE.

IMPORTANT: Please note that it is your responsibility to take care that you are properly insured. IIG can not be held responsible for any costs incurred due to lack of or inappropriate insurance coverage.

If you are under medical treatment and/or have to take special medicines, do not forget to bring them along or ask your doctor whether they are available in Switzerland.
